Therapeutic Approaches to Counselling
I have extensive training and ongoing supervision in Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, and am Certified by the IFS Institute as an Internal Family Systems therapist. IFS is a highly effective, evidence-based, form of therapy that helps people explore different 'parts' of themselves that may be causing conflict or disharmony within the Self. We each have various parts to us that are either wounded, protective, defensive, reactive, or incredibly wise. By getting to know and understand different parts of ourselves, we can become more clear, present, and less reactive.
When we aren't locked into battles with ourselves (however obvious or subtle), and instead have all of our 'parts' working in harmony, we can have access to much more energy, wellbeing, wisdom, and ease. Leading edge research shows that IFS therapy can be highly effective for improving and resolving past childhood trauma, anxiety, depression, psychological blocks, disordered eating, addiction, and even chronic pain.
I have additional training in Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), which is a highly relational and attuned form of psychotherapy. AEDP focuses on healing attachment wounds and feelings of aloneness, which are so often at the core of trauma and depression. Through staying present to experiences of suffering that arise and fostering safety in the counselling relationship, people can begin to experience deep inner transformation.
I am also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement, Desensitization, and Reprocessing), to support people who are ready to process both old and new trauma, and it's related distress. EMDR is a highly effective form of trauma therapy that uses bi-lateral stimulation through eye movements or tapping on the body. This helps people process traumatic memories and their associated negative beliefs and feelings (both conscious and subconscious), so that they are left feeling less reactive, triggered, and disturbed.
I'm also a trained yoga teacher and have had a personal movement and yoga practice for over a decade. The body is an incredible source of information and wisdom, and can be key in both the holding and healing of trauma. Through working with body-based practices and awareness, I support people to gently move through and release old trauma and emotional holding patterns, and experience greater ease in both body and mind. I draw heavily on the work of Pat Ogden and Peter Levine.
Finally, I believe that if I'm going to be a good therapist then I also need to do my own work. I'm continually engaging in personal work and professional development with the support of my own mentors, so that I can serve and support my clients at the highest level.
